6.21.14 Travel Trials and Triumphs

School time! Our group left our London hotel bright and early in the morning, caught a tube to the train station, and then hopped on for a one hour train ride down to Brighton, in Essex County in the southern regions of England. Fun fact: the train was a struggle! There were no designated seats, so as soon as the doors opened you elbowed your way through all the other Brits to find a seat. I ended up getting a seat but had to put my two giant suitcases under my feet so I just curled up into a little ball for the trip.

We got to Brighton at around noon, but our university was still a ways from the station. At the time I wasn't really sure what was going on, but imagine a beautiful boardwalk town by the beach on a bright sunny day, the smell of fish and chips in the air as people strolled around in their sandals to shop or stroll around the pier. Now imagine a Dr. Seuss-style queue of 17 Asian college kids each with two suitcases to roll around heading in a beeline towards the beach, bumping into people and trying to stay calm while our wheels broke or got caught in sidewalk cracks.

But alas we made it! After buying some (very expensive) frozen yogurt on the pier, the university coach picked us up and dropped us off at our dorms so we could officially register and get settled in. The buildings here are called blocks, while our floors are called flats. They then hosted a welcome dinner for all the International Summer School students. As soon as we stepped foot inside the cafeteria, we were politely asked if we wanted Rosay or white wine... or both haha. The legal drinking age is 18 in Europe and it's not that big of a deal here. If you want to drink, you drink. No need to get wasted or "turn up," know what I'm saying? Food was okay. I met some more UC students and even some east coast students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc.

Went on a tour of the school and got some nice pictures in at the University of Sussex sign! :)

Shortly after that, we ran into Sam and Tony! :) Yeah the PhiDE gang @ Sussex is completely reunited!

And what a long day it has been. Time to rest up and get settled into our flats. :) I recorded videos of it but realistically I won't have time to upload. The low-down: each person gets a single bedroom and a single bathroom. It doesn't look terrible at all. You share a kitchen with 5 other people in your flat. :)
