7.22.14 Italy Day 5: Milan

What a lovely way to end our Italy trip! Major fashion and design capital of the world, ultra luxurious, historical, and delicious.

In the morning, we went to the flea market to look for some steals. I managed to find a pair of floral shorts for 3 euros, woo!

We then visited the famous Duomo of Milan. Unfortunately, like all the other religious institutions we've visited, you had to have your knees and shoulders covered, which I completely forgot about it because I was wearing my last clean article of clothing for the trip - my romper! :( Thank goodness Tony graciously offered his khaki shorts for me! So we had a clothing switcheroo and he took my kimono. .__.

Afterwards, we of course were obliged to hit up the Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele II for some serious shopping. Just kidding, all the stores were crazy designer and we just weren't bougie enough for that. BUT! apparently it was good luck to find the bull in the middle of the square and to spin around its balls! (Damn Italy, first Juliet's boobs and now a bull's balls?) So that's exactly what we did. Hope it worked!

We then visited the Santa Maria delle Grazie to see the actual The Last Supper portrait painted by Mr. Leonardo da Vinci himself. I've never seen a single painting on such maximum security before, but it seemed logical given its date and sacredness. Due to its already damaged condition, we weren't allowed to photograph the portrait, but gosh was it beautiful. We stayed there for a while just staring at it in complete silence - I didn't want to leave!

We caught the next train to the Malpensa Airport -- literally ran in right before the doors closed -- and were on our way back to England! It was an exhausting trip home, and given my luck the bus driver from Brighton back to Sussex was especially rude to me. I was SO done. However, I sat down next to a British-middle Eastern guy on the bus. When he wanted to make conversation,  I initially ignored him like a brat due to my sour mood from our meanie bus driver, but he was so kind and friendly I eventually softened up. Turns out, he was coming home from a full-day shift as a waiter at one of the restaurants in Brighton. And during the week, he was a pharmacy student at Brighton University! I was extremely impressed, and so we talked about our love of medicine for a bit. Before he left, he said, "I know today isn't what you expected, but I hope you have a good rest of your night." Ahh, kind people make the world go round. :)

Memorable Characters:

  • jackass Italian guy trying to steal my credit card and rip off all the tourists at the train station
  • poor lady trying to ask me where I got my kimono and me completely ignoring her, thinking she was another con artist or beggar. :( I felt bad but hey, it's been a long weekend!
  • real con artist: "bracelet?" me: "NOOOOOOPE!" <-- done. well done. like steak.

And thus concludes our long Italian adventure! Ciao!
